Packing a Punch

When you picture exercise in a care home, your mind might automatically jump to gentle armchair stretches or a quiet game of balloon badminton in the lounge. While those relaxed routines certainly have their place, staying active should never be a one-size-fits-all affair.

At Bartholamew Lodge Nursing Home, we believe fitness should reflect the individual, their history, their personality, and whatever truly gets their heart pumping. Just ask our residents, who recently traded quiet routines for a pair of boxing gloves!

Finding the Right Fit (and the Right Punch)

There was no shortage of energy in our patio garden recently when the punch bag was set up, the Everlast gloves were laced, and the training session began. With sharp focus, impressive balance, and a right hook that would give any trainer a run for their money, our residents proved that staying active is all about finding what sparks your spirit.

For one person, exercise might mean a peaceful afternoon pottering around the garden or swaying to a favourite record. For another, it is about feeling strong, releasing energy, and stepping back into a sport they loved in their youth. Seeing a resident line up a strike on the punchbag with a determined grin is a wonderful reminder that passion and enthusiasm don't have an expiry date.

Why Person-Centred Movement Matters

While group classes are great for socialising, tailored physical activity offers unique benefits for physical health and mental wellbeing in a nursing care environment:

Empowerment and Choice: Tailoring activities to personal interests gives residents true ownership over their routines, turning exercise from a chore into a highlight of the day.

Strength and Coordination: Movement like boxing builds core stability, upper-body strength, balance, and hand-eye coordination, key components in maintaining mobility.

Stress Relief and Joy: Physical outlets provide a brilliant, therapeutic release for tension, flooding the body with feel-good endorphins that lift the spirits.

Igniting Nostalgia: Re-engaging with sports from earlier in life often sparks fantastic conversations about old gyms, sporting legends, local clubs, and youthful accomplishments.

Exercise Shaped Around the Person

True care means taking the time to learn what makes each resident tick. If someone spent their younger years on the football pitch, in the boxing ring, on the dance floor, or digging in the garden, we look for safe, creative ways to bring those exact experiences into their daily life.

A huge thank you goes to our dedicated team at Bartholamew Lodge, who always listen to our residents' wishes, encourage their goals, and ensure every activity is delivered safely, comfortably, and with plenty of encouragement.

Whether it’s a gentle walk in the fresh air or a heavyweight workout on the patio, we’ll keep championing fitness that fits the person, gloves and all!
