Watching Love Grow

There is nothing quite like getting your hands dirty, feeling the warmth of the sun on your back, and breathing in the fresh air of a thriving garden. At Woodlands Nursing Home, our residents have been making the absolute most of the fine weather by heading outside to put their green fingers to good use.

Over the last few weeks, our garden has been buzzing with activity as residents rolled up their sleeves to plant, weed, and tend to our growing selection of herbs, vegetables, and flowers. It has been a delightful sight, filled with laughter, teamwork, and the timeless satisfaction that comes from working with nature.

Gardening that is accessible to all

We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the simple pleasures of nature, regardless of mobility. That is why our garden features specially designed raised timber beds, making it effortless for residents in wheelchairs to get right up close to the soil.

Without the need to bend down or strain, residents can comfortably pot plants, scoop compost, and carefully set young seedlings into the earth. Equipped with hand trowels and gardening gloves, our keen gardeners have been taking great care of our green patch, making sure every plant gets just the right amount of attention.

The mental and physical benefits of green therapy

Gardening is far more than just a pleasant outdoor hobby. It is a wonderful form of gentle exercise and sensory therapy that offers tremendous benefits for physical health and mental wellbeing in care settings.

Tending to plants provides holistic support in so many ways:

Improving Mobility
Gentle digging, lifting small pots, and scooping soil help maintain hand eye coordination, dexterity, and upper body strength in a natural, rewarding way.

Sensory Stimulation
The rich aroma of fresh earth, the touch of velvety leaves, and the vibrant colours of growing shoots stimulate the senses and offer immense comfort.

Promoting a Sense of Accomplishment
Nurturing a seed and watching it flourish into a healthy plant gives residents a true sense of pride, purpose, and independence.

Encouraging Social Connections
Gathering around the raised beds naturally sparks conversations about old allotments, prize winning tomatoes, backyard greenhouses, and favourite flowers from years gone by.

Nurturing Memories and Creating Smiles

For many of our residents, gardening is deeply rooted in their past. Returning to the familiar feeling of warm soil between their fingers brings back golden memories of family gardens, summer afternoons, and lifelong passions. Seeing residents who might usually prefer quiet spaces actively engaging and smiling as they tend to the plants is a moving reminder of how powerful nature can be.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our dedicated care team at Woodlands Nursing Home, whose kindness and support ensure our residents can enjoy the outdoors safely, comfortably, and with total independence.

We cannot wait to watch our garden continue to bloom and flourish over the coming months, and we are already looking forward to harvesting our crops for the kitchen.
